Why Do People Delay Or Avoid Seeking Help?
The stigma around mental health conditions is one of the many reasons that causes a delay or avoidance of help seeking behaviour.
Early Treatment Matters
Many are unwilling to seek help due to stigma and rejection by society, friends and colleagues. Some people believe that those who suffer from mental illness are dangerous and unpredictable and should be institutionalised. Such mindset could be due to the negative media reports portraying persons with mental health issues in a negative light.
However, many studies have shown that the early diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses are crucial in improving the progress of recovery of these conditions. Taking the time and effort to get an accurate diagnosis will help determine the appropriate treatment.
Today, diagnosis and treatment are readily accessible and available in the community near you.
