In a Population In Brief report released last year (2022) by the Government’s National Population and Talent Division, it was reported that one in every four people in Singapore will be over 65 years old by 2030. As the number of seniors grows, the demand for healthcare services at community-based and residential care facilities to accommodate their growing needs also increases.
As such, Community Care staff need to regularly upskill and update their knowledge and capabilities to keep up with the growing demand for their services in a rapidly growing sector. Want to do so but don’t know where to begin? Kickstart your skill development journey within the sector with these courses from HMI Institute:
Peripheral Venepuncture for Upper Limbs ($299.25 before GST, 16 hours, Blended)
Recommended for: Patient Care Staff; Enrolled and Registered Nurses
This two-day, seven-module course equips Patient Care Staff with the relevant skills and knowledge on how best to collect blood samples from patients’ upper limbs.
The course familiarises learners with the standard precautions and practices of blood sample taking, the types of equipment and items used during the process, the documentary requirements for blood specimen collection, and the considerations for vein choice while taking blood.
As the course is a combination of e-learning and practical sessions, participants will also get to practise on a manikin and be assessed on their skills. This allows them to learn how to address the issues related to venepuncture and blood sampling guidelines in accordance with the organisational requirements.
Stoma Management (Basic) ($152.25, 8 hours, Classroom)
Recommended for: Support Care Staff or Nurses performing ostomy care
This course teaches participants the knowledge and skills to provide stoma care to their patients who have undergone an ostomy.
Participants will learn basic anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract in relation to the different types of abdominal stoma and how to empty and change pouches. Learners will get to experience hands-on practical sessions on manikins, as well as discuss the recognition of stoma complications with other learners.
By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with the skills and confidence to provide safe care to ostomates.
Tracheostomy Care (Basic) ($152.25, 4 hours, Classroom)
Recommended for: Senior Healthcare Assistants and Enrolled or Registered Nurses performing tracheostomy care
Participants learn how to provide safe and infection-free practices that will prevent the risk of respiratory complications amongst patients with tracheostomy.
Participants will learn about the different types of tracheostomy tubes, their components and features as well as how to assess, plan and prepare the equipment for tracheostomy care. Trainers will guide them through hands-on practical sessions on the manikin, where participants will assist in changing the tracheostomy tube and dressing in accordance with the organisational policies and procedures.
